Lalgarh Palace, Bikaner, Rajasthan India

Built in the year 1902 by one of the most outstanding personalities of princely India, Maharaja Ganga Singh ji, the Lalgarh Palace is sheer poetry in sandstone. The Palace defies the bleak and rugged reality of the Thar Desert around Bikaner. Lallgarh Palace is the most completely integrated example of the Indo-Saracenic architecture, and as some hold, the most perfectly realised of Sir Swinton Jacod's creations.
This desert town in the north of the state was founded in 1488 by Rao Bika, a descendent of Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur. Like many others in Rajasthan, the medieval city is surrounded by a high crenellated wall. In the olden days, the city of Bikaner figured prominently on the great caravan trade routes. It is today a lively and colorful city reminiscent of the days of yore.
